LeRoi Moore, saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band, breathed his last breathe
Tuesday afternoon from sudden complications caused by an ATV accident on June
30.
The accident Moore suffered
happened outside the band’s home base of Charlottesville,
Virginia and ended in the
musician, who was only 46, having a punctured lung and broken ribs. He was
hospitalized after the crash, but, owing to some complications, he had to go
back to hospital last month. After an unforeseen twist, the funding member of
the band passed away there, at Hollywood
Presbyterian Medical
Center.
The rock band, which formed in early 1991, announced the
musician’s death at their show at L.A.'s Staples Center. “It’s easier to leave than to be
left,” singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Matthews said. The other members of
the band are now bassist Stefan Lessard, drummer Carter Beauford and violinist
Boyd Tinsley.
On Tuesday night, in memory of LeRoi Moore, the band posted
the following statement on its official Web site: “We would like to take a
moment at this sad time to thank everyone for the outpouring of condolences and
notes celebrating LeRoi’s life. Thank
you for the many inquiries we have received about making a gift in LeRoi's
name.”
Over the years, Dave Matthews Band received 12 nods at the
Grammy Awards. It was short listed for Best Rock Album in 1999 (“Before These
Crowded Streets”) and in 1997 (“Crash”), Best Rock Song in 1988 (“Crash into
Me”) and in 1997 (Too Much”), Best Short Term Music Video in 1996 (“What Would
You Say”), among other categories. In 1997, the group left with a trophy – Best
Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal (“So Much to Say”).
