T. Piekutowski European Style Sausage, a St. Louis, Mo. company, is recalling an estimated 750 pounds of sausage products that may be tainted with Listeria.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced on Thursday that the aforementioned firm is recalling the goods for possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a rod-shaped bacterium that can cause listeriosis, a rare but fatal infection. About 2,500 illnesses and 500 deaths are attributed to listeriosis in the Unites States each year.
The tainted products were put up for sale at the establishment's retail counter in St. Louis, Missouri. According to a statement issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, consumers could have bought them on Dec.18 and 19. They are recommended to go back to the shop where they purchased the possible contaminated items in order to ask for a refund.
The recalled products include various sizes of Krakow sausage wrapped with no label. The items were custom wrapped at the establishment's retail operation and their packages lack the establishment number or the USDA mark of inspection.
The Cattle Network said the contamination was discovered through routine microbiological testing performed by the Food Safety and Inspection Service.
Due to the fact that Listeria is present in almost every environment, during the food production process there are many opportunities for contamination.
