Comedienne Sarah Silverman is never one to shy away from
self irony so it was no surprise that upon receiving an Emmy for Original Music
and Lyrics for her work on “I’m F---ing Matt Damon” she poked fun at herself.
When “I’m F---ing Matt Damon” was released earlier this year
on Jimmy Kimmel Live, at a time when host Jimmy Kimmel was still Sarah
Silverman’s boyfriend (a five-year relationship and apparently going strong) it
was an instant hit.
Silverman and Damon sang happily and comically about their
fictitious affair, making audiences laugh cheerfully – a comedian’s good deed
on an almost daily basis.
The video was soon nominated for an Emmy in the best
Original Music and Lyrics category but not before sadder news emerged: a
separation between the two people who made it funny, Silverman and Kimmel, even
though the latter did not actually appear in the video.
The Creative Arts Emmys were held Saturday night at the
Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles
and celebrated all the more minor categories.
Sarah Silverman was on hand to receive her trophies (“I’m F---ing
Matt Damon” also won a picture-editing award) and told the audience that the
person who truly deserved thanks for her win was her ex-boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel.
“Let’s be honest, Matt Damon had very little to do with this
being popular,” the 37-year-old comedienne said in her usual acidulous way. “Thanks
to the person for whom this whole video was made: Jimmy Kimmel, who broke my
heart – oh,
who’ll always have a place in my heart,” Silverman continued.
Personal experience, what any entertainer draws from to
entertain the public. Courageously, may I add.
Sarah Silverman made her funny video with Matt Damon, Jimmy
Kimmel responded with a video of his own in which he and Ben Affleck pretended
to be romantically involved and elicited just as much laughter as the first and
then Silverman and Kimmel broke up.
Both have been discreet about the ending of their
relationship.
Saturday’s event was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris (“How I
Met Your Mother”) and Sarah Chalke (“Scrubs”). It will air on E! on Sept. 20,
one day before the Primetime Emmys air on ABC.
Other winners included HBO’s mini-series “John Adams” (eight awards, the
night’s greatest victor) and AMC’s Mad Men (four awards).
“The Simpsons” won in the Best Animated Series category,
while “Battlestar Galactica” won the Emmy for Special Visual Effects.
