Well, a little distraction from Sarah Palin’s pregnant
daughter reports is always welcome. Although it’s not clear so far whether
Jamie Lynn Spears or her mom sent Bristol Palin a gift basket, things have
cooled down and left room for yet another political-showbiz clash. And Sarah
“Barracuda” Palin is taken aim at again.
The sisterly duo Heart is angry with the Republicans, as Ann
and Nancy Wilson’s ‘70s hit “Barracuda” was used as a theme song for Republican
Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin during the Republican National Convention
in St. Paul.
After their tune was played on Wednesday at the convention,
the singers reportedly sent a “cease-and-desist” letter to the Republicans so
as to demand them not to use the song anymore.
“The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use
the song, nor would they have been granted that permission,” a statement issued
late on Thursday on behalf of the sisters read.
The sisters claim that campaign officials did not ask either
the group, Universal Music Publishing or Sony BMG for permission to employ the
track.
“We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use
our music,” the Heart duo explained in a statement. “We hope our wishes will be
honored.”
However, on the convention’s final night, after delivering
his acceptance speech, John McCain was joined by his running mate on stage, who
made her appearance accompanied by the ‘70s “Barracuda.” The song was picked
especially for Sarah Palin, as its title used to be Alaska Gov.’s high school
nickname.
Heart, however, does not find the situation sweet in any way.
Nancy Wilson told Entertainment Weekly in a telephone
interview that the situation was not fair. “I feel completely f---ed over,” she
said, according to the magazine.
In addition to this, the two sisters subsequently sent an
e-mail to EW: “Sarah Palin’s views and values in NO WAY represent us as
American women. We ask that our song ‘Barracuda’ no longer be used to promote
her image. The song ‘Barracuda’ was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant
against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for
women. (The ‘barracuda’ represented the business.) While Heart did not and
would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there’s irony in
Republican strategists’ choice to make use of it there.”
