With no new big-screen movie projects in sight, former "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star Sarah Michelle Gellar is turning towards small screen with a new HBO project called "The Wonderful Maladys," reports Variety.
The potential series, which is described as an ensemble piece that revolves around the dysfunctional lives of three adult siblings who lost their parents at a young age, will consist of half-hour episodes. HBO reportedly plans to shoot the single-camera pilot early next year.
The show's creator Charles Randolph revealed he wrote the part with Sarah Michelle in mind.
"Her character has a zealous immaturity - like a drug addict with a to-do list," he told Variety.com. Also speaking about her new part, Gellar, who is married to fellow actor Freddie Prinze Jr, said it is "a terrific next chapter for me."
After finishing her work on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the series she's most popular for, the 31-year-old actress appeared mainly in films such as "Southland Tales," "Cruel Intentions" and "The Return." She has two films, "Possession" and "Veronika Decides to Die," due for release in 2009.
This is the latest in a series of power moves for HBO — including their re-upping of "True Blood" and the optioning of Tom Wolfe's "I Am Charlotte Simmons "— which could mean they've not completely given up.
Randolph, who also wrote the 2003 film "The Life of David Gale," and Gellar would serve as executive producers of the show should it get picked up. Brillstein Entertainment Partners is also involved.
