Country star Sara Evans and former University of Alabama
quarterback Jay Barker have both found love again after failed marriages and
are engaged; the two have seven children between themselves.
Those were bleak times for country singer Sara Evans some 18
times ago, when she announced she and her husband of 13 years were divorcing. A
distraught Evans dropped out of “Dancing with the Stars,” where she was a
contestant, in order to take care of her children and focus on the divorce
proceedings ahead.
Happier news came from the 37-year-old singer’s quarters
this week, as her publicist at Sony BMG Nashville announced Tuesday that she
was engaged to be married. Her fiancé is former University of Alabama
quarterback Jay Barker.
“The couple are enjoying their engagement and look forward
to their upcoming nuptials,” publicist Lori Genes said.
No date has been announced for the wedding.
Barker, 35, led Alabama to
a national championship in 1992 and hosts a morning radio show in Birmingham. His first
marriage ended last summer; he has four children.
Evans has three children with former husband Craig Schelske.
She filed for divorce in October 2006 after 13 years of marriage. The divorce
was completed last September. Evans was awarded primary custody of the kids
with visitation rights for Schelske.
Barker’s friend and fellow radio host at WJOX in Birmingham, Paul Finebaum,
talked to People.com about the happy news. Finebaum revealed that his friend
appears transformed to him, from an “unhappy, devastated person” to a 15-year-old
falling in love.
Finebaum also said Barker, who gets “puppy eyes” when
talking about his love, proposed to Evans a few weeks ago in New York City, apparently
in a little park where they had their first date.
“If you had asked me this time last year if I thought I’d be
sitting here engaged to the most amazing man I ever met I would have just
laughed,” Evans said. “I feel so blessed!”
The first album Evans released was 1997’s “Three Chords and
the Truth.” Her 2000 album “Born to Fly” went double-platinum. Her hits include
“Perfect,” “Suds in the Bucket” and “Real
Fine Place to Start.”
