Actress Sandra Bullock and her husband Jesse James were hit
by a drunk driver in Gloucester,
Massachusetts, on Friday
afternoon.
The couple were driven to their hotel in an SUV at about 10:00
p.m. Friday, when the car driven by 64-year-old Lucille Gatchell hit them.
Police Lt. Jerry Cook declared both vehicles were badly
damaged but none of the persons involved in the accident got hurt. The vehicles
were apparently traveling around 20 miles per hour.
Gatchell was arrested for driving under the influence of
alcohol and crossing the center line, a police report said.
"Mrs. Bullock was very personable and was concerned for
(Gatchell's) well-being," said Police Officer Kevin Mackey, according to
the Boston Globe.
When Gloucester
police arrived at the accident’s scene, found the actress and her husband comforting
and hugging each other. The two were driven away from the scene about 20
minutes after police arrived.
The accident occurred in front of the Gloucester Laundromat
on Whitemore Street.
"We had a witness in back of her getting ready to call 911,"
Lieutenant Gerry Cook of the Gloucester Police Department said, adding that if
it weren't for the slow speed of Bullock's driver, things could've been much
worse.
When arriving at the scene of the accident, police immediately
noticed that Gatchell allegedly "had a strong odor of alcohol and was
unsteady on her feet." She blew an alcohol level two-and-a-half times over
the legal limit, said Gloucester
police, and was arrested right away.
"After I arrested her I had her in the cruiser. I said,
‘Do you realize who you hit?’ She asked, ‘Who?’ I said, ‘Sandra Bullock,’
"Kevin Mackey, who arrested Gatchell said. "She was almost giggling
and laughing. She said, 'My first drunk driving and I hit Sandra Bullock.’ "
Gatchell was taken to the police station and will have to face charges
on Tuesday.
Actress Sandra Bullock was in Gloucester to film a new romantic comedy
titled “The Proposal.” She is famous for appearing in “Speed,” “Miss
Congeniality,” and “While You Were Sleeping.”
