Coit Tower is one of San Francisco’s most important and beautiful features. It was built on top of Telegraph Hill back in 1933 at the bequest of Lillie Hitchcock Coit to make the city more beautiful. Lillie gave a part of her fortune for the purpose of making the city she most loved, the most beautiful.
On Saturday, the citizens of San Francisco celebrated the tower’s 75th anniversary. There were decorations, speeches and a big crowd of visitors to see Coit Tower shining in the morning sun.
At the feet of the tower, there were dignitaries, Europeans and San Franciscans who gathered to see the most beautiful art deco in the city. There were also firefighters, some of whom were dressed in the uniform of the time when Coit Tower was built. Lillie Hitchcock Coit was an honorary member of Knickerbocker Engine Co. No. 5 and she loved the firefighters and their work.
Joanne Hayes-White, San Francisco Fire Chief, said that his “hat is off” for Lillie Hitchcock Coit and for everything she had done for the city. Other speeches were held by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Mayor Gavin Newsom while the firefighters made a demonstration climbing and collapsing a 65-foot ladder from 1925.
Pelosi said that Coit Tower is the first thing she sees in the morning and the last thing she sees at night when she comes to San Francisco. "It is a symbol of San Francisco,” she said ending her speech about the beautiful masterpiece which looks like guarding the city.
