Yesterday, California based storage card
manufacturer SanDisk announced the release of the newest addition to their
Extreme III series of CompactFlash cards, which is a 32 GB version with faster
write time than previous models.
The company, founded in 1988 by two NVM technology pros, was
the one to develop the CF standard of cards which is widely used today for
digital cameras and video records.
SanDisk do not disappoint today either, as they continue to improve
the popular storage medium. The new Extreme III model has a storage capacity of
32 GB, which is double the size of its predecessor in the series. Not only
that, but the read/write speed has been upped to 30 MB/second where it had previously
been 20.
The only other faster CF card on the market is SanDisk’s Extreme IV,
which operates at 45 MB/s, but only stores 16 GB total and costs $100 more.
While SD cards are smaller in physical size and lighter,
their 9 pin interface limits them to a maximum of 20 MB/s. By comparison a
Kingston SDHC, which has the same storage capacity, will take 2.2 hours to copy
its entire content as opposed to only 18 minutes on the SanDisk CF card.
The Extreme III 32 GB will be released this October and will
cost $299. There will, however, be a preview of the device at the International
Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam
this September.
SanDisk say that the new CF card is aimed at professional
high-def camcorder users, as it can store up to 80 minutes of 100 MB/s, 10-Bit,
4:2:2 HD video.
