Being among the companies present at the International Consumer Electronics Show, SanDisk used the opportunity to introduce its new high-capacity solid-state drive for laptops.
The G3 Series, as they are called, represent the company’s third generation SSDs and target the business segment, with a very good price offer. The series is composed of two models, a 2.5 inch version called C25-G3 and a 1.8 inch version called C18-G3. The three available capacities are 60 Giga Bytes, 120 GB and 240 GB and they will all be available on the market at the middle of the year at a suggested retail price of respectively $149, $249 and $499.
"With large capacities and aggressive pricing, SSDs are poised to enter mainstream corporate notebooks in 2009," explained Mr. Rich Heye, senior VP and general manager of SanDisk's SSD business unit.
The company claims that these SSDs are more than 5 times faster than the HDDs used by laptops and also 2 times faster than the SSDs shipped last year, hoping to attract many technology enthusiasts.
SSDs are widely considered the best when it comes to disk drive options. They do not have any moving parts, they are faster and their life expectancy is significantly greater. The only downside at this point is the price, as the SSDs are still more expensive than the traditional hard drives. Many believed that the prices would be lowered soon after their appearance on the market, but so far the measures are not quite as big as customers might hope for.
SanDisk is the number one supplier of flash memory-based data storage cards and its officials are looking to hold on strong to the spot.
