Bearing in mind that the multimedia processing capability is
one of the main factors involved in technology advancements in mobile phone
market, Samsung announced a new mobile application processor.
Called S3C6410, the new application processor combines an ARM1176
processor core, clocked at up to 667MHz, and advanced hardware blocks for
multimedia processing.
By embedding a hardwired Multi Format Codec (MFC) on-chip,
the S3C6410 can perform video capturing in MPEG4/H.263/H.264 format and replay
functions in MPEG4/H.263/H.264/VC1 format using much less power, thereby giving
consumers longer video playback time with a standard size battery. The MFC
offers standard-definition (SD) quality video capturing and playback at 30fps,
as well as supporting two-way real-time video conferencing.
Samsung said the S3C6410 has a flexible and optimized
interface to external memory capable of sustaining the demanding memory
bandwidths required in high-end communication services. The memory system has
dual DRAM and Flash/ROM external memory ports for parallel access and the dual
DRAM port can be configured to support mobile DDR or standard SDRAM
simultaneously, enabling high-resolution display such as WVGA without
sacrificing system performance. The Flash/ROM port supports a variety external
memory storage devices such as NAND Flash (MLC and SLC), NOR-Flash, OneNAND,
moviNAND and ROM, enabling equipment manufacturers to customize their devices
for different market segments and application requirements.
The S3C6410 processor, which supports all major high level
operating systems (HLOS), including Windows Mobile, Linux and Symbian, will
enter into mass production phase in the third quarter of 2008.
Besides S3C6410, Samsung unveiled the S3C4F60, a 65nanometer
single-chip mobile TV System-on-Chip (SoC) which combines a channel decoder
with an RF chip. Samsung’s new S3C4F60 supports supports six different mobile
TV standards and complies with all related specifications of DVB-H/T (ETSI EN
300 744, EN 302 304, EN 301 192 and MBRAI); ISDB-T (ARIB-B29/ B31 1/ 3-Seg);
T-DMB [Korean T-DMB, DAB (Eureka-147)]; and DAB/ DAB-IP standards. The
integrated built-in multi-band RF tuner supports VHF III (174-240 MHz), UHF
(470-862 MHz), and L-bands (1350-1750 MHz).
Samsung’s S3C4F60 also offers a significant boost in mobile
performance. By achieving 180 Hz Doppler frequency performance at DVB-H 16 QAM,
8 K, 2/3 CR, and 1/4 GI, mobile TV products using the S3C4F60 can achieve
perfect reception of digital TV signals, even inside high-speed trains like the
TGV, ICE, or Shinkansen traveling at speeds of up to 300Km/hour.
Samsung’s S3C4F60 is scheduled for mass production in the
third quarter of 2008 and samples will be available from March 2008.
