Salmonella Outburst Linked To Peanut Butter

The outburst of salmonella that affected approximately 410 people in 43 states, and is believed to have caused the deaths of three people was apparently been caused by a bad patch of peanut butter. Lab tests on an infected jar of peanut butter match the exact strain of salmonella that affected the whole nation.

The salmonella strain is the most common of them all, Salmonella Typhimurium and currently there are 2,500 types of salmonella bacteria in the United States. The salmonella bacteria was found in a five-pound package of King Nut creamy peanut butter that had been collected from a long-term care facility.

King Nut does not distribute its products directly to customers, but uses intermediates to do this. As a precautionary measure all King Nut peanut butter and Parnell's Pride peanut butter with the lot code "8" have been extracted from the market.

The situation is bad as it is and if things get any worse, the US might be in for some real problems. This is not a good time for not having health insurance and unfortunately the number of people who are in this position is rising.

PCA is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other agencies to determine whether the current outbreak could be at all related to products made in the PCA facility.

The outbreak has currently affected 410 people but there might be more cases appearing in the next days.
