Salma Hayek and Ex-Fiancé Secretly Married On Valentine’s Day

We weren’t sure they were going to make it to the altar after breaking off their engagement last summer, but actress Salma Hayek and the father of her baby, French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault, got carried away on Valentine’s Day and tied the knot with a small civil ceremony.

In an unexpected turn of events, Salma Hayek, 42, and François-Henri Pinault, 46, decided to end a whirlwind on-again romance and get married in the City Hall of the Sixth Arrondissement in central Paris, according to the weekly French newsmagazine Le Point, which is owned by the Pinault family.

Sixth Arrondissement Mayor Jean-Pierre Lecoq subsequently confirmed the report to the French news agency Agence France-Presse.

Hayek's spokeswoman, Cari Ross, confirmed in an e-mail Monday that the marriage had taken place on Saturday in Paris. No further details were provided.

The couple, who have a daughter together, Valentina Paloma, born in September 2007, announced their engagement and Hayek’s pregnancy in March 2007. By July last year, the couple decided to go their separate ways and end their engagement after almost one year and a half.

They were reunited within a few months, but Pinault was also photographed making out with another woman late last summer and it was thought that he and Hayek were remaining friendly for the sake of their daughter.

Hayek has long said she doesn’t need marriage, and even though the two were engaged, she made many conflicting statements that made it sound like she wasn’t certain if she wanted to ever formally marry Pinault.

“You want to grow old with someone, you want to have a partner and to have children — we have all those things,” Hayek told Glamour last year. “Some people need the commitment. Maybe we'll just make the party!”

During a recent appearance on David Letterman’s Late Show in mid January, she told him that she didn’t know when she would marry Pinault, if ever, and was pretty vague about it. When asked “Is there going to be a wedding?” she answered “I don’t know, maybe, but then again, maybe not.”

In the last few years, aside from her acting career, Hayek has emerged as a savvy business woman. She is an executive producer for the hit ABC television show “Ugly Betty” and she also owns her own production company, Ventanazul in association with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.

In 2002, she received an Oscar nomination for playing the leading role in 2002’s “Frida.” Her other credits include “Desperado,” “Fools Rush In,” “Wild Wild West,” “After the Sunset,” “Bandidas” and “Ask the Dust.”

Pinault is chief executive of PPR SA, a French luxury retail group with some impressive labels, including Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, Balenciaga, a french department store and national music chain, and Puma. His worth is estimated at $17 billion. He already has two other children from a previous marriage.
