The video game industry is in full ascent as consoles become more powerful and games become more exciting, but how much more can it go up? This month sales were 7% lower than last year’s September when because of the Halo and Wii frenzy, hardware, software and accessories brought a huge profit, a 75% increase from 2006. Nintendo is still the leader, the Wii proving to be the most popular console, selling 687,000 units.
Second place belongs to the DS, also a Nintendo product, which managed to sell 536,800 units. Nintendo proves that it can dominate both markets, including the portable console one, beating the PSP which only managed to sell 238,100 units, almost half the sales registered by the DS.
Software sales also experienced a decrease in sales of 6%, with $616.1 million games sold compared to the $656.5 million sales in September 2007. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, by Lucas Arts, was the hit of the month selling 610,000 copies for the Xbox 360, 325,000 for the PS3 and 223,000 units for the Wii. The new game by Lucas Arts was expected to be a great success as it was released on all major console platforms and the game itself is pretty good, with an interesting plot and fantastic physics engine.
In the top 10 best selling games of the month we can also find “Wii Fit with Balance Board” occupying second place with 518,000 units sold, “Rock Band 2” for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 on third place with 363,000 copies bought and on fourth place another Wii release, “Mario Kart Wii with Wheel” selling 353,000 copies.
