Saeid Jalili Appointed as Iran’s New Chief Nuclear Negotiator

After Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, has resigned from his position, the one who took his place in the world public eye was Deputy Foreign Minister Saeid Jalili. His appointment was made on Saturday, the ISNA news agency reported. He has been deputy of Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in European and American affairs.

Larijani's resignation has been accepted by the Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and it was followed by efforts to find and appoint a successor, government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham said. Details about the reason behind the change weren’t released yet.

"Larijani had resigned several times and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad finally accepted his resignation," IRNA quoted Elham as saying.

This, lets call it adjustment, came just three days before the next round of talks between Iran and the European Union, scheduled for October 23. On the day the swap was made (Wednesday), Larijani had a scheduled meeting with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana either in Vienna or Rome, Tehran informed.

After the meeting between the tow mentioned above, the next round of talks between Iran and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would have followed, the deputy of Iran's National Security Council, Javad Vaeidi, had said.

The officials at the IAEA said their organization hadn’t heard yet about any change, but that the International Atomic Energy Agency won’t issue any official comment on the resignation of a government official. The technical team from IAEA is in Tehran at the moment but its members, mainly technical experts, weren’t in touch with Larijani, officials said.

According to Elham’s sayings Larijani did not say why he wanted to resign. He only said that he planes to focus on "other political activities." The government spokesman also stated that the nuclear policy of Iran would not change because of Larijani's resignation.

"Iran's nuclear policies are stabilized and unchangeable. Managerial change won't bring any changes in (those) policies," Elham said.
