A Sacramento man was arrested Saturday after police found
300 cats packed in three freezers in his home.
Police also found 30 other live cats in the house, which were
all removed by city animal control personnel.
47-year-old Michael Louis Vondueren was arrested on
suspicion of possessing an automatic weapon and obstructing police officers,
while animal control officers are also considering issuing citations. If
investigations prove Vondueren is guilty for the cats’ deaths as well, he could
face additional charges.
Vondueren initially refused to allow police officers enter
his home, but they got in, as they feared for the safety of Vondueren’s mother,
who is 81 years old.
When entering, they encountered a horrible stench and
discovered the whole house was littered with cat feces. They soon discovered
the three freezers that were crammed with dead cats.
"Every so often, if they wouldn't clean or something,
there was a smell, an odor that just reeks on the street," neighbor
Marquita Trotter told the local ABC affiliate.
Police did not reveal where Vondueren’s mother was taken,
but the house was sealed shut, as was ordered by a city building inspector.
The cats that were saved are currently being examined by a
veterinarian.
