What’s the best way to spend a Sunday afternoon? Go to church and get run over by an SUV. That’s what happened this Sunday afternoon, in Venice, in front of St. Mark Catholic Church, when an SUV plowed into a crowd of people.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, the woman who was driving the car stepped on the gas pedal by mistake, when her daughter was having a seizure. The accident caused the death of a 28-year-woman. Other three people were severely injured.

Officer Julianne Sohan of the Los Angeles Police Department said that the four victims were taken to a hospital, but the 28-year-old woman died. Two victims were in critical condition and the third’s condition was serious.

Sohan said that authorities didn’t arrest the driver.

Maria Marquez-Cornejo, one of those who attended the church said it was a “terrible” accident, adding that “everyone was yelling,” and “there were bodies and blood all over,” reported the San Jose Mercury News.

Teresa Marquez, another witness, said that the woman who was driving the car turned to the back seat and lost control of the vehicle. The driver was very scared and was acting very chaotic.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the St. Mark's pastor, father Michael Rocha said that about 300 people were at the Mass. Most of them had left but about 30 people were still talking on the sidewalk when the accident happened, around 1 p.m.

Apparently the driver’s mother was also in the car. All three who were in the car were transported to a hospital. They had minor injuries.

Authorities didn’t make public the victims’ or the driver’s identities. They were investigating the scene of the accident.
