A horrifying accident occurred in northern Colorado early Thursday as an SUV plunged off an overpass, hit a concrete embankment and caught fire. The seven passengers, including two small children, were all killed, authorities said.
The site of the crash is on Interstate 25 near Johnstown, 40 miles north of Denver. After hitting the overpass, the SUV went airborne for about 40 or 50 feet and struck an embankment before catching fire.
The identities and exact ages of the seven victims weren’t determined yet, said Colorado State Trooper Gilbert Mares. The vehicle – a Chevrolet Suburban - was registered in Alberta, Canada, the trooper added.
The precise cause of the crash wasn’t established yet, but Mares said that weather did not appear to be a factor. Police investigators found the driver’s license at the crash scene, but the photo couldn’t be matched with any of the victims. The victims included an infant, a toddler, three other males and two females. One of the males was driving, said Colorado State Trooper Gilbert Mares.
"Not only is (the SUV) burned, it has a lot of crushed deformation from hitting the concrete," Mares said. He added that this is the worst car crash he ever saw in his 18 years as a trooper.
The autopsies are scheduled for today (Friday). It is unknown how long the identification of the victims will take due to the condition of their bodies.
It is not clear yet, whether alcohol, drugs or high speed, are factors that led to the deadly crash.
