Sexually transmitted diseases are some of the most fast-spreading diseases out there. Most of them are not only highly contagious, but some can be potentially fatal, such as AIDS and the virus that leads to AIDS, HIV.
Recently, it surfaced that more and more Americans are getting infected with sexually transmitted diseases, the most astonishing ascending record going to Chlamydia. According to the most recent statistics, issued by federal health officials on Tuesday, it seems that Chlamydia infections have passed the million-cases per year mark.
The released numbers cover the year 2007, and they show how much the numbers of infections with both Chlamydia and syphilis have risen – in fact, they have both been on a rising trend for three years in a row.
Unfortunately, doctor and researchers don’t seem too optimistic regarding the chances the United States have to lower the rates of these two particular diseases, and of sexually transmitted diseases in general. The most worrisome part of the statistics is the extremely high number of cases of infections with Chlamydia, not to mention the fact that the number of cases have been rising for three years. Another disease that has researchers worried is gonorrhea, which is also one of the most frequently transmitted sexual diseases. Left untreated, these two diseases cause as much as 50,000 women to become infertile every year.
