A Staten Island woman accused of beating her 10-year-old son to death was charged with first-degree manslaughter on Sunday.
Melissa Sekulski, 30, acknowledged before police investigators that she beat her son, Jaquan Porter, until the kid died. The incident happened on Friday evening in an apartment in the Mariners Harbor section, police said.
One of the blows to the boy’s head was so powerful that he fell off his feet and on his way down he hit his head against the wall. His aggressive mother called an ambulance and the boy was taken to Richmond University Medical Center. Unfortunately, the doctors couldn’t do anything to save him and he was pronounced dead of brain injuries.
The family’s next-door neighbor – J.R. Moore – told the newspaper that the mother came to his screaming that her child couldn’t breathe. When he accompanied her to the apartment, he saw the boy lifeless and with lots of fluid pouring out of his nose.
"I was thinking, poor woman - I was really feeling sorry for her," Moore said.
According to one of the raging mother’s fellow inmates, Melissa Sekulski said that she “lost it,” the New York Daily News reported.
"She was telling a lot of people that the kid got out of hand and she just lost it," the inmate said.
The aggressive mother also said in a statement to the police and an assistant district attorney in Richmond County that she had previously physically abused her son Jaquan during the past three years. She also confessed that she burned him with a spoon several times.
The most surprising thing is that most family members said that they though Ms. Sekulski was an excellent mother.
