SAG’s Strike Vote, Delayed

Strikes seem to be “the new black” in Hollywood and generally in the movie-making industry. At the end of 2007, the Writer’s Guild of America went on strike. What ensued was an unexpected chaos, which affected not only movies, but also dozens of sitcoms and television shows.

Shows like “The Office”, “Lost”, “Desperate Housewives”, “Dexter”, “Eli Stone”, “American Dad”, “Jericho”, “General Hospital”, “The Young and the Restless”, “Scrubs”, “The Colbert Report”, “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”, “Saturday Night Live”, “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” from stations like NBC, Comedy Central, ABC, CBS were postponed, which naturally lead to unrest and displeasure among viewers, some of which never returned to their favorite shows after the strike was over. Many actors also supported the strike, joining in the picketing ranks.

Also in 2008, another vital part of the movie industry announced that they would vote on whether they should go on strike or not – the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). As of late, however, there has been some obvious dissension even among the members of the Screen Actors Guild. The dissension had an immediate result, namely that the vote on the decision to go on strike was delayed.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Screen Actors Guild, the casting of the vote will be delayed until January the 14th, after an emergency meeting of the union’s national board. The actors voted on whether or not to cast the ballots, and 2,524 were for the vote, while 1,373 opposed the vote. Among the contesters were some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Cameron Diaz and Pierce Brosnan.
