Sexagenarian actor Ryan O’Neal and his son with actress
Farrah Fawcett, Redmond O’Neal, have been charged with possession of methamphetamine
following their September arrest in Malibu.
Ryan and Redmond O’Neal, aged 67 and 23, respectively, were
charged Wednesday with felony possession of methamphetamine and are scheduled
to appear in court on Nov. 14 for their arraignment.
The father and son were arrested on Sept. 17 at the actor’s Malibu pad when police
performed a routine check on Redmond O’Neal, who is on probation. Police said
at the time that drugs were found on the son as well as in the father’s
bedroom.
Both men were arrested and taken into custody at a local
sheriff’s station. They were released a few hours later after posting $10,000
bail each.
Wednesday, Redmond O’Neal was also charged by the Los Angeles County District
Attorney’s Office with two misdemeanor counts of possession of drug
paraphernalia and one misdemeanor count of illegal possession of pepper spray.
Ryan O’Neal said it in September and he is saying it again
now – the actor denies that the drugs found in his room belong to him. His
lawyer, Mark Werksman, told People magazine that the actor was “frustrated” and
“upset” to be charged since he does not use drugs and does not want his image
associated with that of a drug user.
Werksman previously told the press that Ryan O’Neal was
distressed about the arrests, especially since he was innocent and especially
since he had focused on his acting and on taking care of his family.
The lawyer told People magazine Wednesday that his client
had had a hard time over the years coping with his son’s substance abuse
problem.
Ryan O’Neal is best known for portraying Oliver Barrett IV
in the 1970 film adaptation of Erich Segal’s novel “Love Story,” a performance
which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
