Actor Ryan O'Neal pleaded guilty to a felony charge of drug possession in a Malibu, Calif., courtroom Friday. Moreover, the agreed to enter an 18-month drug deferment program. The Los Angeles County district attorney's office says the case will be dismissed if O'Neal successfully completes the program.
O'Neal is also forbidden from possessing any controlled substance or associating with anyone whom he knows to be a drug user.
"Ryan was anxious to move on with his life with privacy and dignity and that's what we're trying to do here today," the actor's attorney, Mark Werksman, told People.
The charge stemmed from a September 17 incident in which the actor and his 23-year-old son, Redmond, were arrested at their Malibu home by police who said they found methamphetamines in the house while conducting a probation visit in connection with a previous drug case involving Redmond.
Redmond, who has a troubled history with drugs and has been in rehab before, will face up to his charges on February 20 for arraignment and plea.
Ryan O'Neal was nominated for a best actor Academy Award for 1970's "Love Story." Redmond, 23, is his son from a relationship with Farrah Fawcett.
Moreover O'Neal had two children with his first wife, Joanna Moore: actor Griffin O'Neal and actress Tatum O'Neal, his co-star in the 1973 movie "Paper Moon," for which she won an Oscar for best supporting actress.
