Russian Foreign Minister to Meet Iran's President

Russian Foreign Minister is to have a previously unannounced visit in Iran Tuesday.

He will hold talks at 1600 GMT with Iran’s President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in Tehran. Ahmadinejad already said that the country will not back down if a dispute with the West regarding the nuclear war rises, and that he is not interested in talking with the U.S.

He dismisses U.S. allegations that Iran is developing a nuclear bomb and says that it is only developing civilian nuclear energy. According to media sources, Ahmadinejad told student members of the Basij religious militia: “This nation will not negotiate with anyone over its obvious and legal rights. We are not even interested in negotiating with you (the United States) and the Iranian nation does not need America.”

Mr. Lavrov will discuss with the president on the margins of the nuclear and bilateral issues. The option of the U.S. to use force against Iran was ruled out by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The visit of the FM coincides with the talks in Tehran between officials from the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency watchdog and Iran regarding the implementation of an August deal that is to resolve doubts regarding past secret Iranian activity.

The talks are to settle Iran’s activity regarding the efforts made to enrich uranium. IAEA Director Mohamed ElBaradei will have to report to the agency national board of governors by mid-November. If the answer is not a positive one, the Western powers will adopt harsh sanctions against Iran.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said that the trip was announced on Tuesday due to technical reasons. He said: “The visit is being seen as a continuation of the high-level contacts that took place in Tehran between the Russian president and the Iranian president. It is for synchronizing watches, and developing (what was discussed) at the recent summit.”

Because Iran refused to stop enriching uranium the UN Security Council has already imposed two sets of sanctions on the country.
