Russia Denies Plans to Sell S-300 Missiles to Iran

Russia’s top military officials declared that their country has no plans to sell its highly developed S-300 anti-aircraft missile system to Iran.

Russia's Federal Military and Technical Cooperation Service said on its Web site that, although the issue of supplying Iran with S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems was raised by the media, there were no talks with the Iranian side on this matter at the moment.

However, Iranian Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said loud and clear on Wednesday that his Iran and Russia reached an agreement regarding the system.

"The S-300 system, under a contract signed in the past with Russia, will be delivered to Iran. The timing of the delivery ... will be announced later," Najjar told Fars News Agency.

Russia has already closed a similar deal also criticized by the West. Earlier this year, Russia delivered 29 TOR-M1 surface-to-air missiles to Iran under a contract of approximately $1 billion, but the S-300 missiles are longer-ranging.

The U.S. and Israel said that Tehran could very well use the Tor-M1 missiles to attack its neighbors, but Moscow has replied that the missile system is purely defensive.

The U.N. already imposed several sanctions on the Islamic Republic because of its refusal to halt sensitive atomic work suspected by the Western powers of attempting to manufacture nuclear bombs. However, a ban on the conventional weapons sales to Iran hasn’t been imposed.

"Russia and Iran continue their civilized relationship in the sphere of military and technical cooperation, respecting in full regulations of international export legislation and (their) international obligations," the Russian federal agency said.

U.S. authorities have urged Russian on several occasions to stop delivering weapons to countries whose political regimes Washington disapproves of, but Russian President Vladimir Putin said three months ago that he will not take in consideration attempts to impose arms deal restrictions "based on unilateral and politicized assessments".
