English comedian Russell Brand is well known for his type of
humor: thunderous, unrestrained, exuberant, precisely what the MTV Video Music
Awards require from a host – so we have a match made in unconventional award
ceremony heaven.
The 25th MTV Video
Music Award event must overdo its predecessors, with more extraordinary
performances from guests, more flamboyance from the host and the roster of
presenters, more jokes, more stars and of course more music.
In short, bigger, louder, better is the aim here!
A VMA press conference took place Thursday on the Paramount Studios backlot,
just three days before Sunday’s grand event.
Host Russell Brand was on hand to assure journalists and all
else assembled there that he would do his job properly - hair all puffed up in
his signature fresh-out-of-bed-haven’t-had-a-comb-in-years hairdo, clothes as
black and retro as ever and attitude as insouciant as always, Brand promised a
“bloody exciting” Sunday up ahead.
And what better bait for prospective viewers than squeaky
clean teen superstars The Jonas Brothers, whom the comedian called “God’s
favorite virgins,” who are going to have such a performance that “it will make
the concept of an afterlife seem tame by comparison.”
As confirmation of the upcoming excitement, a glowing
Christina Aguilera seductively stepped out of a limousine right on the scene
and grabbed the mike to make yet another promise: “You’re going to get a first
look and a first listen at my new image and my new sound.”
Aguilera is set to perform her brand-new single “Keeps
Getting Better,” off her best-of album of the same name which is due in stores in
November.
The new mom added that while her last album, “Back to
Basics,” had been “about vintage glam,” as had been the accompanying style and
music, the new one was “all about the future.”
The stage was further populated by rapper T. I., who took
possession of the microphone to announce that he would also regale the audience
with a new song from his upcoming album “Paper Trail.”
The Jonas Brothers, Aguilera and T. I. will be joined by
Rihanna, Katy Perry and no other than Kanye West, who last year swore he would
never attend another MTV event again, after failing to win in any of the five
nominations. This time around, the rap star is set to close the awards ceremony
in style, with an out-of-this-world performance.
Other noteworthy reports concerning the upcoming musical
celebration have been Britney Spears’ own participation. The pop princess will
open the show but not perform. She graciously confirmed her appearance in a
statement, saying MTV had long played an important role in her career and that
she could not miss the occasion. “I’m excited to open the entire show, to say
hi to my fans and to be nominated.”
Indeed, Britney has three nominations, for Best Female
Video, Best Pop Video, and Video of the Year for “Piece of Me.” Though
generously nominated before, Britney has yet to go home with a trophy.
