The iPhone seems to be capable of doing a lot of things on
its own, but there’s rumor of a new device in the making that will increase the
iPhone experience even more, and we are talking of course about the gaming
experience, which is the most popular feature of the iPhone right now.
It appears
that the iPhone might be getting a gaming controller, and we are not talking
about the iControlPad, but the JoyPod, developed by manufacturer Belkin. This
good looking add-on is said to begin testing in October and to have Apple’s
full support (though we still lack confirmation of that).
The JoyPod promises to enhance the gaming experience on
Apple’s device (whether it’s the iPhone or iPod Touch), and bring it to its
maximum potential. The device has 8 buttons, 6 of which are on the front,
offers audio input and dock connector for power and syncing. App Store games
will never be easier to play, Belkin says.
Rumors are that Apple is ready to offer SDK support, so that
App Store games take full advantage of the controller. Launching such a device
would indeed boost the iPhone sales (and the iPhone does need a popularity boost
right now).
A game controller is particularly important if we take into
consideration the download charts for the App Store, which indicate that games
are users’ favorite applications, and this includes both paid and free games.
These figures also came to confirm predictions that the
iPhone, among other things, will turn into a major attraction in terms of gaming
capabilities. Exploiting that idea even further will certainly contribute to
Apple’s goal of selling over 10 million iPhones this year alone.
