Trent Edwards led the previously winless and demoralized Buffalo Bills to a much-needed 17-14 win over the New York Jets on Sunday and showed that he might be the Bills' quarterback of the future right at his first career start.
The rookie third-round pick started the game in place of Bills quarterback J.P. Losman, who couldn’t play due to a sprained left knee, and showed both composure and skill as he passed for 234 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 22-28 attempts.
"For all of the hard work and extra hours I put in…it was something that was very, very enjoyable after the game," Edwards said. "We had some tough losses during my career in college but this one definitely outweighs all of that."
During the post-game press conference, Bills’ coach Dick Jauron hinted that Edwards could be the starting quarterback from now on, even if Losman recovers. He is expected to miss at least another week.
"I’ve always said, nobody’s job is secure," Jauron said. "From week to week, we play whoever we think is the best guy. So we’ll see where it goes."
Marshawn Lynch added 79 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries for the Bills (1-3), who haven’t won in the regular season since December 17, when they posted a 21-0 win over Miami. Lee Evans caught six balls for 72 yards to lead the Buffalo receiving corps and Michael Gaines added a touchdown catch.
For the Jets, Chad Pennington threw 32 good passes of 39 for 290 yards, a score and a pair of picks. Jerricho Cotchery had eight receptions for 106 yards, and Laveranues caught eight, one in the TD area.
Thomas Jones was held to 35 yards on 12 carries and Leon Washington rushed for a touchdown in the loss.
Over the last weeks they recorded one loss after another and watched several of their players suffering heavy injuries, including tight end Kevin Everett, who's recovering from a severe spinal cord injury. So the victory over the Jets gave the Buffalo some much-needed optimism.
