Tony Romo threw for 345 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Dallas Cowboys to a 45-35 victory over their old rivals, the New York Giants, in the opening game of the season in the highest-scoring game ever between the two clubs that gave Wade Phillips a win at his debut as the Cowboys’ coach.
Romo went 15-of-24 for 345 yards and one interception, which set up the Giants' final touch down, a score that cut Dallas' lead to 38-35 with 4:09 left. He successfully passed to six different receivers and tight end Jason Witten led with six catches for 116 yards and a touch down.
His touch down passes covered 12, 22, 9 and 47 yards and his scoring run covered 9 yards.
"I don't think you are going to put up 45 points every week, but we sure are going to try," Romo said.
Eli Manning was the other Cowboys’ shining star as he passed for 312 yards and four touchdowns before leaving the game late in the fourth quarter with a bruised right shoulder.
After Romo's 12-yard touchdown pass to Witten on 3rd-and-11 with 3:59 to go in the second quarter, Dallas were in control with a 17-6 lead, or so it seemed as they didn’t enjoyed it very much because the Giants had something to say about it and scored 10 points in the final 21 seconds of the half.
The New York Giants suffered two important injuries in the first half. Their defensive end Osi Umenyiora endured a knee injury in the first quarter and starting running back Brandon Jacobs sprained his knee in the second.
Cornerback Kevin Dockery also left the field in the fourth quarter with an unidentified leg injury.
