The Pittsburgh Steelers must really
want quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the seasons to come, as they agreed to
an eight-year extension of his contract, worth $102 million, which puts him on
the list of the highest paid players in the National Football League.
According to ESPN, the contract
includes a $36 million guarantee, the largest in the team’s history. According to
the same source, the Roethlisberger’s agents closed the deal on Sunday night
and will make an official announcement on Monday.
It’s a big contract for the
26-year-old, who was the youngest quarterback to add a Super Bowl to his list
of trophies at the age of 23, as he joins names like Peyton Manning, Brett
Favre, Carson Palmer, Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick in the $100
million-contract club.
The Steelers are also said to do
more than just a contract extension and add a new member to the team, Mewelde
Moore, but a deal hasn’t been confirmed so far.
Despite his 2006 motorcycle
accident, when according to paramedics on the scene he was close to dying, Roethlisberger
managed to recover and make the Steelers want to keep him close until 2015,
offering him an impressive extension to the contract.
Since he became a Steelers’
player, Roethlisberger managed to rank among the record breakers of the NFL,
with impressive scores and completion percentages, and even setting a record
for his own team in 2007, when he became the only quarterback to throw 5
touchdowns in one game.
