The creators of some of the most controversial franchises in the gaming history are either taming the shrew that haunts their heads every day or are getting old: they’ve recently announced a competitor for Wii Sports, called Table Tennis.
When you have dead bodies like GTA-Hot Coffee mod, Manhunt 1 and 2 or even Bully in your backyard, it’s somehow unusual to focus on humane activities like playing table tennis, as if nothing happened. But there you go, Rockstar Games have done it again, this time in a positive way: Table Tennis has been announced for Nintendo Wii (it's about time, a Starcraft II Terran would say...)
Two questions stem from this announcement: first, why do they want to compete with Nintendo’s own sports-oriented title that comes bundled with the tiny console (Wii Sports), and why did it take them so long to understand that table tennis would be the perfect game for Wii’s unique controllers?
Anyway, it’s good enough that they’ve finally decided to bring it to the Wii masses, so here are the juicy details about it: Rockstar’s San Diego has been working in collaboration with Rockstar Leeds at the Wii title for quite some time (the game is already available on the Xbox 360 platform), however Wii fans will have to wait until September to get their copy. But they will enjoy a much more realistic experience than Xbox 360 owners, thanks to Wii’s remote controllers. The game’s physics engine will allow for authentic forehand and backhand topspins on the Wii, and players will get to choose between 11 uniquely detailed characters, each with their own style of play.
"Ever since we released Table Tennis, fans have been asking us to create a Wii version," Rockstar's Sam Houser said.
"By bringing Table Tennis to the Wii and utilising the motion-sensitive Wii Remote, a new audience can now experience a game that is beautifully designed and impossible to put down."
