“RocknRolla” Falls Short

“RocknRolla” is Guy Ritchie’s latest movies in what seems to be a series of action-comedy films, started with the notorious “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch”. But this movie lacks the entertainment value of “Snatch” and the intricate plans of “Lock, Stock...”

Basically the movie is beneath the standards Guy Ritchie set for himself after directing “Lock, Stock...” and “Snatch”, already a part of pop-culture.

First of all, “RocknRolla” has too much narration. There’s a voice all through the movie, which was probably used because the story itself is confusing and the end result was incomprehensible. Another mistake is introducing characters who have a relationship important to the plot 20, 30 or 40 minutes apart.

Also, the narration describes characters in scenes where those certain characters do nothing to live up to their narrated reputation. Furthermore, the narration stops abruptly when Guy Ritchie finishes introducing and describing the characters - which is about halfway through the movie.

Secondly, the characters are flat. They don’t have any distinct traits and their narrate description in only skin-deep. They are the usual stereotypes, either young, disoriented wrong-doers, middle-aged criminals or the cliché femme fatale.

The plot revolves around a real estate scam, planned by a Russian Mafia member. The scam ends up producing millions of pounds. Naturally, every important criminal in London is out to get their slice of the catch.

The movie tries to stick to the recipe Guy Ritchie used so far, but it goes wrong along the way. There was some narration in “Snatch”, for instance, but “RocknRolla” took it too far. All the characters in “Lock, Stock...” and “Snatch” were criminals in one way or another, and some of them starred in both movies, yet their stories, their backgrounds, modus operandi and motivations were all different.
