Heavy metal band Metallica, hip hop group Run-DMC and guitarist
Jeff Beck are all among the nine nominees announced yesterday to compete for
five spots in the popular Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Other nominees include musician Bobby Womack, soul band
Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, the Stooges, as well as
eclectic American funk band War.
Artists can be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
25 years after they released their first album or single.
Over 500 music industry experts will select five of the
candidates for the 24th yearly induction due to take place on April
4 in Cleveland.
The so-called winners will be made public early next year.
The event has usually been held in New
York but is returning to Cleveland
after more than 10 years. Those interested will be able to purchase tickets for
the ceremony for the first time.
Run-DMC are praised for establishing the “template for
modern hip-hop, from their everyday-teenager style to their blazing live shows
to a catalog of classic songs that few rappers have matched,” the Hall of Fame
Foundation said in a statement, according to Reuters.
The group had an impact on the progress of hip hop during
the 1980s and is credited with breaking the musical genre into mainstream
music.
In 2004, “Rolling Stone” ranked them number 48 in their list
of the best musical artists of all time.
Heavy metal band Metallica grew “to become the most
successful and acclaimed heavy metal band of their era - a position they’ve
consistently held for over a quarter century,” the foundation said.
The group has released nine studio albums, two live albums,
two EPs, over twenty music videos and forty-three singles.
