Remember The Jetsons and their
robot-servant Rosey? Well, those famous cartoons are not longer so fictional as
before: in just a few years Honda’s Asimo humanoid robot will be ready for a
lifetime of domestic chores, as it currently learned how to serve tea.
Although the tea needs to be
prepared and then be placed on a tray on a cart by a human being, Asimo is able
to push the cart, graciously lift up the tray and then place it on the guests’
table. Honda’s engineers even taught Asimo to take a couple of steps back and
to bow in a traditional Japanese style.
Honda’s brand new robot is also
able to collaborate with other fellow robots on certain tasks. For example, after
one of them will push a cart with tea for two tables, it will be helped by
another Asimo to serve both tables’ guests. This cooperative behavior is possible
thanks to a wireless network that connects the robots.
Asimo is also able to monitor its
own battery level, and when it gets low it can automatically head to the
nearest recharging stations. It backs into the charging stand all by itself and
recharges standing up.
Honda’s Asimo robot is one of the
most advanced humanoid robots ever developed; the company unveiled it earlier
in December.
