Robert Redford Heads for the Woods

Veteran actor Robert Redford has set his eyes on a new project, an adaptation of the Bill Bryson travelogue “A Walk in the Woods,” which could be directed by Barry Levinson.

Redford told the Associated Press in a phone interview late last week that the 1998 best-selling book about a journey along the Appalachian Trail had been a very enjoyable read.

“It'll be fun. I don't know when I've read a book that I laughed so loud,” the actor said. “Also it's a chance to take a look at the country. ... The backdrop is pretty terrific, if you stop to think of all the visuals that are possible as they go along that trail.”

Redford will star as Bryson and produce.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, there are still a few details to work out, such as Levinson formally agreeing to direct the film. Bryson’s book tells how he and a recovering alcoholic friend attempted to cover the Appalachian Trail and the adventures that ensued.

Redford has been interested in the adaptation of the Bryson book for some years now, hoping for a re-teaming with his “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Sting” co-star Paul Newman.

The HR adds that while “Walk” is among Redford’s upcoming projects, it is not necessarily the very next one, as he is also developing an untitled Jackie Robinson film that Thomas Carter is attached to direct.

The 71-year-old actor is attached to star as Brooklyn Dodgers manager Branch Rickey, who remains in baseball history as the man that helped transcend the color barrier by signing the African-American player Jackie Robinson.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that whichever of the two projects comes closer to solving its script and financing issues will be Redford’s next film.

He told the Associated Press Friday that he would tackle the “inside, down-to-the mats story” of how Branch Rickey helped Jackie Robinson break into major league baseball in 1947.

“What Rickey had to do, what Robinson had to go through, and the partnership they had to form, that's a story nobody knows,” Redford said. “It's just a fascinating story.”
