A recent study published in this month’s issue of Journal of
Applied Social Psychology has reached the conclusion that drivers with bumper
stickers might have a significantly more aggressive style of driving.
The research was presented by William Szlemko, a Ph. D.
student of social psychology at Colorado State University. The conclusions are
that drivers who personalize their cars, whether is a bumper sticker or a set
of rims, have the tendency to react with signs of aggression in a large case of
scenarios. The student also added that the owners of such cars are 15 percent
more likely to fall into a road rage state.
The given explanation is that drivers who mark their cars
with stickers tend to consider the road their own personal territory and just
like with any other of their possessions, they feel the need to defend it
against all intruders.
Szlemko explained for the Washington Post that one of the
study’s tests involved a car not moving on a green light, in order to determine
the level of frustration for the drivers waiting in line. According to the
results, the horn was heard 2 seconds faster from the cars with bumper
stickers.
There are thousands of such bumper stickers all across the
United States, not to mention new flashy rims and it is hard to believe that a
car with a God Bless America sticker, a Children On Board sticker or a Visualize
World Peace message should be considered more dangerous than a car without any
markings. On the other hand, it couldn’t hurt to be a little more careful when
it comes to car with statements such as My Kid Beat Up Your Honor Student, Don’t
Mess With Texas or An Armed Society Is A Polite Society.
