On Friday, three network news anchors teamed up in a massive campaign aimed to raise funds to develop breakthroughs that will put an end to cancer, CBS reported on its Web site.
Hosts Katie Couric, Brian Williams and Charles Gibson, along with dozens of A-list celebrities and millions of people who turned in to watch the event, came together to stand up to cancer. The show, an unprecedented massive campaign, aired simultaneously on CBS, ABC and NBC.
The number of TV viewers hasn’t been revealed. Although CBS refused to do it, a spokeswoman disclosed the fact that the audience was impressing.
The purpose of the network partnership was to raise money and persuade scientists to collaborate harder in order to improve cancer care, said Laura Ziskin, executive producer of the show and survivor of cancer, a disease that takes one life every minute.
The amount of money will be administered by the American Association for Cancer Research, the oldest and largest cancer research organization worldwide, which is focusing on accelerating progress against cancer.
"For people struggling with this disease, or those who will be diagnosed, scientific breakthroughs can be a matter of life or death - literally. We want everyone to know that they can make a difference in this fight," said CBS' Evening News anchor Couric, whose husband’ and sister’s lives were claimed by cancer.
Rihanna, Kate Bosworth, Miley Cyrus, Jessica Alba, Beyonce, Fergie, Jennifer Aniston, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Garner, Meryl Streep, Halle Berry, Charlize Theron and Ellen DeGeneres are among the celebs who joined forces to fight against the disease.
"I really feel that we are the generation that may see the end of cancer," said Dr. Andrew Thorburn, a cancer survivor.
