The poisoned man who could unlock the mystery of the ricin found in a Las Vegas hotel has regained consciousness. Although he is still in critical condition at a Las Vegas medical center, Roger Bergendorff talked to his brother and with FBI investigators about the ricin found in the hotel room.
Bergendorff, who has been hospitalized since 14 Feb with respiratory ailments and failing kidneys, told his brother that he believes he was contaminated by the ricin poison found in his Las Vegas motel room. According to his younger brother Erich, who spoke with the Associated Press giving details about the phone conversation with his brother, Bergendorff had no intention to use the poison to endanger anyone.
"He did mention that he would have never done anything to anybody," said Erich Bergendorff for the AP.
"He himself is under the impression he was contaminated by it — he did mention the ricin and seemed to say something like, 'Gee, it sure worked on me.'"
Bergendorff also told his brother that the ricin poison is easy to make, but it wasn’t clear weather he said that because he made it himself or watched somebody else do it.
On Friday, FBI agents and the Las Vegas police questioned the ill man over the ricin found in his hotel room hoping Bergendorff would provide them with information that could help solve the case. The ricin powder and castor beans, from which it is derived, was discovered in the hotel room on Feb. 28.
Both agencies wouldn’t comment about the information obtained from the discussion with the ailing man.
The protein ricin is a toxin extracted from the castor bean (ricinus communis) and is highly lethal. Ricin has an average lethal dose in humans of 0.2 milligrams (1/5,000th of a gram), but in proper doses, ca be used in treating cancer.
Bergendorff has staid at an Extended Stay America hotel room where the deadly substance was found for an undisclosed period of time and was leasing the room when the substance was discovered.
One of the man’s relatives entered the room to retrieve the man’s belongings when he was in hospital and discovered the vials of white powder and showed it to the hotel’s manager.
