Richard Garriottt is the video game tycoon you have all heard about. What you probably don’t know is that he is the son of Owen Garriott, celebrated NASA astronaut, and also a man who paid over $30 million to become a space tourist. Garriott embarked on a Russian Soyuz heading towards the International Space Station two days ago, on a journey that will last for 10 days.
Garriott was dismissive about any dangers that may occur during the ride, stay and return trip. Although many have reported rough landings when entering the Earth’s atmosphere upon returning from the International Space Station, the magnate was not worried about such an event taking place on his own return trip.
This could be accounted by inherited courage or the excitement, which took over his fears. Not even the breaking down of the International Space Station’s toilet managed to frighten Garriott. Whatever the reason for his worry-free attitude, Garriott is obviously ecstatic about the trip.
The capsule latched onto the International Space Station earlier than scheduled by a few minutes. The TMA-13 team is formed by Richard Garriott, U.S. astronaut Michael Fincke and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Lonchakov. The professional astronauts will replace the team currently aboard the Station and will remain in space for a few months.
Garriott, however, will be returning on the 23rd of October accompanied by Yuri Volkov, a Russian cosmonaut who has been on duty at the International Space Station since April. Volkov’s father was also a famous astronaut, and the man was the first son to follow his father into space. An emotional Owen Garriott applauded when the TMA-13 docked successfully.
