Well, let’s recap, shall we? What are sex-themed teen
comedies all about? They usually portray a couple of nerdy-looking guys, who are
obviously still in high school, in a prolonged and sometimes funny attempt to
either lose their never-ending virginity or, if they have already triumphed
with regard to that subject, find a new harebrained, drunken or over-aged
victim.
However, the more or less intelligent jokes in such movies
leave room for a few laughs anyway. They may be gay, overcooked or clichéd, but
moviegoers surely know what to expect, as they have come to see a sex-themed
teen comedy, right? And as such films are all alike, nothing should come as a
surprise.
Thus, if “Sex
Drive” resembles other flicks belonging to the
same category, don’t condemn it for its lack of originality. Don’t even try to
figure out answers for questions which pop up throughout the ride. The only
answer is given by the fact that “Sex
Drive” is just another hilarious teen movie.
Ian, played by Josh Zuckerman, (“Austin Powers in
Goldmember”) is an ordinary kid who is relentlessly pestered by all the people
who surround him. Rex, impersonated by James Marsden, who blesses “Sex Drive”
with the same get-up-and-go that was evident in his “Hairspray” and “Enchanted”
characters, this time is the type of insistent and homophobic older brother, who
warns Ian over and over again that by failing to date “people wind up getting’
gay.”
Ian’s buds and family show apathy regarding his virginity-related
issue and simply classify him as sexually discouraged. In addition, his work
colleague makes the most of Ian’s unconfident nature and forces him to wear the
embarrassing and huge Mexican doughnut costume while handing out coupons in the
shopping center.
Nevertheless, things take an edgier turn when Ian
establishes a connection with an online self-proclaimed hottie, whom he decides
to meet and eventually lose his virginity with and therefore steals his
brother’s vehicle so as to meet Ms. Tasty (the girl’s Internet nickname),
played by “30 Rock’s” Katrina Bowden.
He hits the road accompanied by his childhood best friend
Felicia (Amanda Crew) and girl-bait Lance (Clark Duke), as they have to drive
some 400 miles to get to Ms. Tasty.
Ian and Lance, the poles apart pals, challenge each other
and give life to the entire action, as well as the gags. Whether chatting about
girls or spending time with the Amish, the actors who fill the shoes of the teens
took advantage of their roles and had much fun with playing them, a fact that’s
obvious all the way through the movie.
“Sex Drive”
is not bad, it’s just a sex-themed comedy; a better sex-themed comedy, I’d say.
We have the laughs, the guys and the silly action: the perfect formula for an
usual teen flick that can’t possibly go wrong.
