Research in Motion has finally announced a release date for
its long awaited BlackBerry Bold. The device is the company’s latest weapon in
the 3G war and the strategy is to take the attention off T-Mobile’s G1 release.
The BlackBerry Bold will be available through AT&T
starting with November 4, at a price of $300 through a two-year contract with
the carrier. The Bold’s price is pretty bold considering that the iPhone 3G
sells for $200 and the G1 is available for $180.
The device has similar design features to the iPhone and a
leatherette back-plate. It offers a QWERTY keyboard, support for 3G, HSDPA,
EDGE, simultaneous voice and data capability, stereo Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, a
standard 3.5mm headphone jack, a 624 MHz mobile processor, full GPS
capabilities and a 2 megapixel camera with a 5x digital zoom. It provides 1
Giga Byte of internal memory which can be expanded up to 16 GB.
"The development of the BlackBerry Bold smart phone was
an ambitious undertaking, and we focused intensely on the things that are most
important to mobile customers when developing this best-in-class smart phone
for HSDPA networks around the world," said RIM’s co-CEO and president Mike
Lazaridis. He wanted to make sure that the company’s customers understand that
the delay was caused by their wish to make sure that there will be no flaws
with the new device.
The company wants to position the device on a different
segment than the iPhone’s, as its answer to Apple’s product is already on the
market under the name Storm, which features touchscreen technology, a bigger
screen and accelerometer.
