The former North Carolina Senator and 2004 VP candidate John Edwards, whose 2008 campaign for the White House was crushed between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, apparently had an illegitimate child with a campaign aide while running for U.S. President.
The National Enquirer, which unveiled a lot of apparently unbelievable dirt which later proved true, caught John Edwards on July 22 while paying a night visit to his alleged former lover at the Beverly Hilton at 2:40 a.m. Confronted by reporters, Edwards freaked and hid in a bathroom, before being escorted out by security guards.
He was apparently visiting Rielle Hunter, who gave birth to a child earlier this year. Another married campaign worker, Andrew Young claimed paternity of the woman's then-unborn child last December, presumably to take the fall for the then-Presidential candidate. The baby's birth certificate does not list the father's name.
John Edwards took decided to drop out of the race for the Democratic nomination in January, but until then, his central campaign message of fighting poverty and improving the lives of American families had a great success and attracted many working class voters as well as the support of several big labor unions.
Edwards alleged at the time that quitting the presidential race would enable him to better support his wife through her grueling health problems. The Edwards announced last March that Elisabeth’s supposedly cured breast cancer had returned, but that the campaign would continue.
The former senator focused his bid for the Democratic nomination on helping the middle class and on fighting poverty; he offered a plan for universal health care before both Obama and Clinton and was the first to ask Congress to stop funding the war.
