The upcoming U.S. movie "The Wrestler" is upsetting the Iranian media, the British newspaper Daily Telegraph said on Saturday. Apparently, one of the characters is the reason why Iranian newspaper have labeled the movie as “offensive”
“The Wrestler” won the Golden Lion, the top award at the Venice Film Festival, the festival announced on its website. In the movie, Mickey Rourke plays an aging wrestler who can hardly deal with the fact that his career has come to an end, and eventually starts a romance with an aging stripper played by Marisa Tomei.
The movie “The Wrestler” was directed by Darren Aronofsky, a director who is known for 2000’s “Requiem for a Dream,” which starred Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly, and 2006’s “The Fountain,” starring Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman.
In his quest for glory, Randy 'the Ram' Robinson, the character played by Mickey Rourke is fighting against a wrestler called the Ayatollah. After Randy defeats the Aytollah, he breaks the Iranian flag and it throws it to audience members, who chants “USA, USA”
Last week for his role in The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke was nominated for the Golden Globe Awards in “Best Dramatic Actor” category. The movie is scheduled to debut in the United States on December 17.
This is not the first time when Iranian media protests against a movie. Last the Iranian government government accused Hollywood of "psychological warfare" over the depiction of Iranians in “300”, the movie which depicts the battle between Greeks and Persians at Thermopile.
