People.com is reporting that the nasty divorce trial between
former supermodel Christie Brinkley and Hamptons architect Peter Cook has come
to a sudden denouement, with the estranged spouses reaching a settlement early
Thursday morning.
The divorce trial between former Sports Illustrated model Christie
Brinkley and her husband of one decade, Peter Cook, began little over a week
ago in a Central Islip, N. J. court.
Lurid details and reciprocal accusations were abundant from the
onset. It looked like it would drag on for a long time, as both parents wanted
custody of daughter Sailor, 10, and son Jack, 13, from a previous marriage of
Brinkley’s, whom Cook adopted.
People magazine is reporting on its website that Wednesday
night consisted in intense negotiations for Christie Brinkley, Peter Cook and
their respective legal teams but the heated discussions came to a positive end
Thursday morning.
At 6:14 a.m., a settlement was reached, a source close to
the case confirmed to People.
Details may be revealed in court later in the day.
The 54-year-old model ad actress filed for divorce after ten
years of marriage to the 49-year-old architect, when his extramarital affair
with a young assistant became a tabloid scandal.
Christie Brinkley took the stand during the trial, talking
about the day her “perfect” life was “shattered,” upon learning of her husband’s
infidelity. She also talked about her husband’s expensive online porn habit and
how this made her worry for the children.
Peter Cook admitted all these faults, the affair with a then
18-year-old assistant, his attempt to buy her silence and his $3,000 a year
online porn expenses.
Dr. Stephen Herman of Manhattan,
appointed by the court to analyze Christie Brinkley, Peter Cook and their two
young children, talked in court Tuesday, July 8, testifying that the two
children should stay with the mother, while the father should be involved in
their lives.
Herman characterized Cook as “a narcissist” who has “an
insatiable appetite” to have his ego fed, reported the Associated Press. He
added that the architect “needs constant reassurance that he is a terrific guy.”
Of Christie Brinkley, Herman had to say she needs therapy as
“an outlet for her anger and feeling of betrayal” by her unfaithful husband. He
also questioned “her choice of male figures” and her repeated failed marriages.
Brinkley told the court that although she is not “a huge fan
of psychotherapy,” she would do anything, “whatever it takes to convince the
court,” to receive custody of Sailor and Jack.
Herman noted Tuesday that there probably were “some problems”
before Peter Cook’s affair with his assistant and that “certainly,” initiating
that relationship “was the beginning of the end of the marriage.”
The psychiatrist also said the two children will need
counseling.
Aside from Jack and Sailor, Brinkley is also mother to Alexa
ray Joel, 22, from her marriage to singer Billy Joel.
Herman said in court that the “only viable option” was for
Brinkley to live with the children and for Cook to be involved in their lives.
