Paul Harvey, who enchanted millions of radio listeners every day with his disjointed approach, resolutely established judgment and traditional viewpoint, passed away on Saturday at the age of 90, ABC News has announced.
Paul Harvey died at a hospital located in the vicinity of his winter residence in Phoenix, the network explained, but did not offer further information on the cause of death.
He was on the air for more than six decades and grew to be a fixture all around the United States in 1951, when he joined ABC Radio. Delivering his daily program from outside Chicago, Paul Harvey would start each show of his by saying, “Hello, Americans, this is Paul Harvey! Stand by for news!” and conclude with a vigorous “Paul Harvey … good day!” In addition, among these two sections, Mr. Harvey would bring into play a series of trademark lines that listeners even came to anticipate, such as “Stay tuned for the rest of the story” and “May I have your undivided for just a moment.”
Paul Harvey’s twice a day radio broadcasts once reached approximately 22 million listeners who tuned in for his witty remarks, down-to-earth knowledge and views on news.
In 2006, Forbes.com cited an ABC executive as admitting that Paul Harvey was grossing more than 10 percent of the network’s $300 million in advertising billings. Moreover, the network became so satisfied with Paul Harvey’s work that it offered him a 10-year, $100 million contract in 2000.
The most perceptible marks of Harvey’s eccentric delivery were his vivid pauses and idiosyncratic inflection. A significant part of his popularity was generated by the consistency with which he moved from his usual monologue to reading commercial messages. He explained his passionate support of his sponsors as such: “I am fiercely loyal to those willing to put their money where my mouth is.”
