Remy Ma Is Convicted and Faces 25 Years in Jail

Remy Ma, former member of the Terror Squad and Grammy-nominated rapper, shot a woman last year in a quarrel in New York and was convicted of assault, weapons possession and coercion on Thursday.

The 26-year-old rapper’s lawyer tried to convince the court that it was an accident. But the jury went with the version by which Remy Ma shot Makeda Barnes-Joseph, a friend of hers, outside a nightclub in July 2007. She got into a fight with Barnes-Joseph because she allegedly had stolen $3,000 from her purse.

The rapper left the scene quickly, but crashed her SUV a few miles away. Police couldn’t find the money or the gun.

Ms Remy Smith (real name) now faces up to 25 years in jail.

When she heard the verdict, the rapper wiped away her tears after hearing the verdict. As she was handcuffed and left the courtroom, she "wailed loudly and sobbed openly" The Associated Press wrote on its Web site.

The sentence for Remy Ma’s case will be given on April 22. Ivan Fischer, the artist’s lawyer, said he will file an appeal as soon as possible, MTV News reported on Thursday.

Ms Smith had also faced charges of gang assault, witness tampering, witness intimidation and assault in a separate incident, but they were cleared by the NY Supreme Court. She was charged after her associates beat up the boyfriend of a witness.

"The jury acquitted the second half of the indictment. That will help the appeal because that evidence, those charges, shouldn't have been in the case to begin with. And there are other issues we think may turn the conviction around" said Fischer regarding the tampering and intimidation charges his client had faced.

Remy Ma was ordered to remain imprisoned without bail until she is sentenced in April.

Ms Barnes-Joseph told the court she underwent three operations because the shot that ripped through her abdomen. She was hospitalized for about three weeks according to court records.

Remy Ma, one of three female rappers to ever have a number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, received the best female hip-hop artist award at 2005's BET Awards and was nominated in 2004 for a Grammy award for her part in Terror Squad's song "Lean Back."
