Relay for Life is the biggest fundraising society in the world. The events organized by it take place on all continents and countries. Right now, such events are being held all over the United States, to help fighting cancer. The American Cancer Society also has an International Relay for Life Program, which consists of teaching programs.

Outside the United States, there are 19 countries who are now working with the American Cancer Society, as to find out more about the terrible and incurable disease which kills million of people every year.

 Relay for Life started working 25 years ago and 2009 is expected to be the most special year for the society and its entire program. One of the biggest and important events will take place on January 13, pointing the Howard County’s 2009 Relay for Life.

The program started out as a 24-hour walk and has now turned into a powerful association, which goes on saving lives and saving money to fight cancer. The Howard County’s 2009 Relay for Life is an event which marks the cancer survivorship, during which the association raises money for the American Cancer Society.

The first meeting will take place at 6 p.m. on January 13 at the East Columbia Library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, Columbia and the relay will take place on June 5 and 6 at Hammond High School.

During the event at Hammond High School, the team members camp out and try to track one member during the night. A Survivors' Lap, Luminaria Ceremony and Kids' Walk will also be a part of the event.

A Facebook presentation together with meals, fundraising ideas and fun will characterize the event too. Throughout the whole year, more and more people are encouraged to form such teams and fight the disease.
