Very unfortunate news were reported from Houston yesterday, as hundred of thousands of voraciuos swarming ants were reported all over the area, invading homes and ruining electirical circuits and computers.
The intruders are formally known as "paratrenicha species near pubens" but are generally referred to as "crazy rasberry ants," getting their nick name from their erratical wander all over the place and also from an exterminator, Tom Rasberry, who battled them in the past few years.
The ants were first reported in Texas in 2002 and even though scientists still do not know where they came from, it is believed that they were dropped off through some cargo shipments in the port of Houston. At this point, as much as five Houston-area counties are dealing with the annoying ant problem and there seems to be no immediate solution for their extermination.
So far the ants have messed up sewage pumping stations, ruined computers and triggered the mechanism on a large number of fire alarms. Also, reports about their presence have been received from NASA’s Johnson Space Center and Hobby Airport, but so far no major damage has been announced in these locations.
After hundreds of calls from frustrated homeowners and bussinesses affected by the recent attacks and also the obvious implications of not taking immediate action against the ants, the Texas Department of Agriculture has begun a series of discussions with A&M researchers and the Environmental Protection Agency in order to figure out the best strategy for the ants’ extermination.
