U.S. rapper TI has pleaded guilty to all three charges of
possessing illegal firearms, at a court hearing in Atlanta on Friday, March 28.
The rapper, whose real name is Clifford Harris, was arrested
last October, after being accused of possessing unregistered machine guns that
a bodyguard had bought for him.
He initially pleaded not guilty, but changed his mind as, in
that case, he faced a 10-year sentence as well as a $250,000 fine for each
count.
After pleading guilty, he will now serve 1000 hours of
community service working with young people, in order to obtain a lighter
prison sentence. He was also fined $100,000 and will spend three years on
supervised release, after fulfilling the sentence.
"I'm not looking forward to being incarcerated," TI told
the Atlanta
Journal and Constitution. "I have a long road of
redemption to travel... I realize completely I violated the law, and I take it
very seriously."
T. I.’s prison time could be increased or reduced, depending
on his fulfillment of the terms of the deal and good behavior.
The rapper has a history of illegal activity and was
convicted of a violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act in 1998 and
given seven years probation, the Department of Justice said. It is illegal for
convicted felons to have someone else purchase firearms on their behalf.
Authorities said the bodyguard admitted to purchasing
firearms for the rapper and for members of his entourage in the past.
