Rapper Marion “Suge” Knight was arrested Wednesday on
charges of assault and domestic violence, after allegedly beating his
girlfriend while wielding a knife, police said.
Knight, 43, was also charged with two drug offenses, as he
was found to be in possession of ecstasy and the prescription narcotic Hydrocodone.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, officers
received a call about a car that was out of control on the Strip, at about 6:30
p.m.
Police said that Knight’s girlfriend of three years told
officers that the rap mogul hit her in the head during an argument, while he
was driving. She made an attempt to escape, grabbing the steering wheel and
causing the vehicle to hit a curb and stop abruptly. She then got out of the
car and ran away, with Knight pursuing her.
Luckily for her, police officers arrived at the scene just
as Knight was standing over the woman, threatening her with a knife. He was
arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled
substance, possession of dangerous drugs without a prescription, and battery
domestic violence. His girlfriend was taken to Spring Valley Hospital, where
she was treated for minor injuries.
Over the years, Knight has had many problems with the law.
In 1996, he was sentenced to prison for violating his probation on a previous
assault case by beating a member of the rival gang Crips at the MGM Grand
Hotel. The incident was caught on a surveillance camera and took place a few
hours before the Death Row Records founder and rapper Tupac Shakur were
attacked in a drive-by shooting. Knight was driving the vehicle in which Shakur
was fatally shot and was also slightly wounded himself.
Knight was also named by police as a suspect in the
assassination of rap artist Christopher Wallace, who was known as Notorious
B.I.G. and had signed to a rival record label. But Knight was never charged and
the murder remained unsolved, like the one of Shakur.
Knight got out of prison in April 2001 and the following
year his record label was closed, following an investigation that stemmed from
allegations of murder, drug trafficking, money laundering and gun running. The
company pleaded guilty to misdemeanor tax charges.
Following Wednesday’s arrest, Knight posted a $19,000 bail and was scheduled to be released later
during the day, with a promise to appear Sept. 26 in Las Vegas Justice Court, a
court spokeswoman said. His lawyers declined to comment on the matter.
